National Anthem | Provisional Government of Free India |
Subh Sukh Chain was the national anthem of the Provisional Government of Free India under Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The anthem was inspired and mostly translated from the Sanskritized Bengali hymn ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata’, written by Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore into Hindustani (an amalgamation of Hindi and Urdu).
In 1943, Subhash Chandra Bose shifted to Southeast Asia from Germany, and took over I.N.A. Now, he with the help of Mumtaz Hussain, a writer with the Azad Hind Radio and Colnel Abid Hassan Saffrani of the I.N.A., had rewritten Tagore’s Jana Gana Mana into Hindustani for being used as the national anthem.[ref]
Lyrics
Subh sukh chain ki barkha barse,
Bharat bhaag hai jaaga.
Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha,
Dravid, Utkal, Banga,
Chanchal sagar, Vindh, Himaalay,
Neela Jamuna, Ganga.
Tere nit gun gaayen,
Tujh se jivan paayen,
Har tan paaye asha.
Suraj ban kar jag par chamke,
Bharat naam subhaga,
Jai ho, Jai ho, Jai ho,
Jai, Jai, Jai, Jai ho.
Sab ke dil mein preet basaaey,
Teri meethi vaani.
Har sube ke rahne waale,
Har mazhab ke praani,
Sab bhed aur farak mita ke,
Sab god mein teri aake,
Goondhe prem ki mala.
Suraj ban kar jag par chamke,
Bharat naam subhaga,
Jai ho, Jai ho, Jai ho,
Jai, Jai, Jai, Jai ho.
Subha savere pankh pakheru,
Tere hi gun gayen,
Baas bhari bharpur hawaaen,
Jeevan men rut laayen,
Sab mil kar Hind pukare,
Jai Azad Hind ke nare.
Pyaara desh hamara.
Suraj ban kar jag par chamke,
Bharat naam subhaga,
Jai ho, Jai ho, Jai ho,
Jai, Jai, Jai, Jai ho. [ref]
English Version
The anthem is itself quite easy to understand but its translated version also hits the heart of the reader the same way and blesses English readers to feel it.
Auspicious happiness and peace shall rain
Bharata's fate has awaken!
All of Punjab, Sindh, Gujrat, Maratha, Dravida, Utkala, Bengal
the wavy seas, the Vindhyas, the Himalayas, the blue Yamuna and Ganges
May we sing your praises everyday
May we get life essence from you
Each one shall get hope
May the auspicious name of Bharata shine over the world like the eternal sun
May you be victorious! May you be victorious! May you be victorious! May you be victorious!
Your melodious music awakens harmony
In the hearts of creatures belonging to every province and every religion
All of us, dissolving our divisions
All of us, coming into your lap
Knitting necklace of love
May the auspicious name of Bharata shine over the world like the eternal sun
May you be victorious! May you be victorious! May you be victorious! May you be victorious!
In the mornings, I shall spread my wings singing your praises
The plentiful, winds of aroma, bring pleasant monsoons to life!
All of us together, shall raise the name of 'Hind'
And the slogans of 'Victory to free Hind'
Oh, this lovely country of ours!
May the auspicious name of Bharata shine over the world like the eternal sun
May you be victorious! May you be victorious! May you be victorious! May you be victorious!
