RAIGAD
History
In the ‘Dakshin Digvijay’ conquest of Shivaji Maharaj, the Raigad; Sindhudurg; Ratnagiri areas of Maharashtra were brought under the rule of Swaraj.
This capital was named from the original name ‘Rairi’. Observed to be the tallest, strongest, and impregnable fort in Maharashtra, Shivaji Maharaj chose this fort to represent Swaraj.
Location
Made the capital of Hindavi Swaraj by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his coronation, Raigad is nestled in the scenic mountains of Sahyadri.
Present
The main fort, queens' chambers, watchtowers, check posts that once made up this fort are now in shambles due to natural and artificial activities. Though only ruins remain of the once-magnificent fort, Raigad, literally "King's Fort" is now a popular tourist and trekking destination.
