Hemu

Maharaja Hemchandra, also known as Hemu, a Hindu hero, began his life as a greengrocer, and by dint of his own efforts ascended the throne of Delhi with the title Vikramaditya, only to become the last Hindu Emperor during Islamic invasions who ruled Delhi after Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan.

Hemachandra Vikramaditya is one of the most prolific icons of resistance and valour. Scholar RC Majumdar argues that Hemu (as he is commonly addressed) 'furnishes the only shining example of a Hindu, born and brought up as such in a Muslim state, who once dominated the political stage of North India by sheer merit and personality without any advantage by birth or fortune'.[ref]
