Sri Aurbindo was one among the most remarkable and visionary leaders of Indian Renaissance and Indian nationalism. A versatile genius - a great poet, a profound thinker, a notable metaphysician, a great seer and an ardent patriot- he gave a spiritual and intellectual backing to the ongoing freedom struggle. He was one among those rare clairvoyant personalities whose vantage point was beyond mere achievement of freedom. He regarded freedom as the first step of the journey that India has to cover, and in doing so- he unveiled before her a purpose, a divine responsibility that she has to fulfil on the international plane. Independence we have achieved- but what followed was a long drawn period of inactivity, of dissipation of national energy that stems from ‘aimlessness’ and ‘unawareness of the true temperament’ of the nation; something Aurbindo had warned us against decades ago. In this context, his thoughts acquire no less than a prophetic significance, and must be given due consideration if India strives to resurrect.
